Albert Samuel Maiden Round, Age 20
Sargeant, 79419, 459th Battery Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
Albert was the son of Thomas Round who was the eldest son of Alfred and Sarah Ann Round, so this made the Round brothers his uncles.
The census for 1901 shows Albert at the age of two living with his parents (Thomas and Mary Ann) living at 4 Spring Hill, Dawley, His father working as a miner. Albert had enlisted in 1917 into the KSLI and served with them from April until January when he transferred to the RFA, He had however got into trouble in the sergeants mess over a deficiency of £11 in the mess funds, which he then had to repay, this must have played on his mind to such a degree that Albert committed suicide on October 31st 1919 and was buried at Preston (New Hall Lane) Cemetery in grave O.CE.623 with a Commonwealth War Graves Headstone. Shown below are newspaper cuttings from the Journal which cover the incident. (See Dave Shaw’s book.)
